Poncho Sanchez is an icon in Latin communities for his efforts to bring the real sounds of Latin Jazz to the world. He was born in Laredo Texas of Mexican American parents. He was exposed to and learned from two distinctive styles of music: Afro Cuban (mambo, son, cha cha, rumba, guaracha & salsa) and be bop jazz. Originally he played guitar, sang in an R&B band and taught himself flute, drums, and timbales and finally bcame a conguero or conga percussionist.
In the year 2000 he won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for the work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. He has performed with such greats as, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Hugh Masakela, Clare Fisher and Tower of Power amongst others. He played for several years with his mentor, Cal Tjader till his death in 1982.
